What does a gemological laboratory really certify

Each laboratory analyzes the diamond according to the system of 4CCarat (weight), Color, Clarity, Cut. In addition to these, proportions, fluorescence, symmetry, and finish are measured. The report also includes a unique certificate number, often laser-inscribed on the girdle of the stone and visible under a microscope.

The difference between entities is not in what they measure, but in how strict and consistent they are in doing so. A diamond with the same nominal grade can receive slightly different assessments depending on the laboratory. For this reason, with the same description, the entity that issued the certificate affects the stone's real value and comparability.

What is a GIA certificate and why is it the benchmark

The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is the institution that invented the 4Cs system in 1953 and is considered the strictest and most reliable standard in the world. A diamond with a GIA certificate is evaluated according to extremely rigorous and consistent criteria over time, making it the benchmark for high-value stones and investments.

The GIA does not trade in diamonds and does not assign prices: it is completely independent. When a diamond exceeds a certain carat weight and value—in our case, when it is larger than 1.5 carats—the GIA certificate is one of the best safeguards for the buyer, as it ensures maximum recognition on the international market and in the event of a future resale.

What is an IGI certificate and when is it worthwhile?

The International Gemological Institute It is the most widespread gemological laboratory in the world by volume of stones analyzed, with its main headquarters in Antwerp. It is particularly strong in the certification of diamonds set in finished jewelry and laboratory-grown diamonds, which we remind our clients of. Risivi & Co. does not process or use them.

Release times are fast and costs are low, which is why IGI is widely used in commercial jewelry and for mid-range stones. Its grading scale is reliable, although historically considered slightly less conservative than GIA on color and clarity.

What is the HRD certificate and its role in Europe

The HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant) It is the Belgian gemological institute based in Antwerp, the historical European heart of the diamond trade. It is highly respected in Europe and follows the nomenclature standards defined by European directives. HRD is often chosen for diamonds destined for the European market and for stones of declared Antwerp origin.

Its grading standards are rigorous, and it enjoys considerable prestige across the continent, although it is less widely recognized outside Europe than the GIA.
