The radiant cut was created in 1977 by Henry Grossbard, a master cutter who took 33 years to perfect his vision. His goal was revolutionary: to create a stepped cut (like an emerald) that could, however, shine with the same intensity as a brilliant cut.
He achieved this by radically altering the pavilion (the underside of the stone), applying a complex pattern of triangular and “diamond” facets typical of brilliant cuts. With its 70 facets, the radiant is an optical machine designed to maximize light return.
Understanding the radiant means comparing it to its more famous “neighbors.” The choice between these cuts defines a ring's personality.
This is the most common comparison. Both offer a sophisticated rectangular silhouette.
The Emerald: It is a step cutting (step-cut). Its long, linear facets create a “hall of mirrors” (hall of mirrors). It celebrates the clarity and purity of the gem, offering elegant flashes of light.
